Biography

Jonnie Cumming

Jonnie Cumming started playing classical guitar at Sheffield Music Academy in 2009 under the tuition of Callum Dewar and is now studying under Mark Ashford and Mark Eden of the Vida Guitar Quartet and Eden-Stell Duo at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire where he graduated with a first in 2015.

 

Jonnie has performed in numerous solo Masterclasses with guitarists such as Xuefei Yang, Gary Ryan, Johannes MöllerLorenzo Michelli and Chris Stell. In 2014 and 2015, he was a finalist in the Birmingham Conservatoire Guitar prize judged by Helen Sanderson and Chris Stell respectively.

 

 In 2013 Jonnie gained a bursary to attend West Dean International Guitar Festival, Jonnie returned to the festival in 2014 and 15 with the rest of Alma Guitar Quartet where they took part in a masterclass with the Grammy award winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and performed in a number of concerts including the first 'Young artist platform'.

 

Jonnie continued his studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2016 where he is attending a master's in instrumental performance. Jonnie plays a guitar made by Oxfordshire luthier Oren Myers.

Jonnie is passionate about music education and teaches in a wide variety of settings.  He has experience teaching classical and electric guitar as well as the ukulele. He teaches in many formats from one-to-one lessons all the way up to whole class. His flexible and friendly approach has obtained consistently high results within lessons.

 

During his time at Birmingham Conservatoire, Jonnie has completed two pedagogy courses with Luan Shaw during which he was able to observe teachers from Services For Education (formerly Birmingham Music Service) with whom he is now on the sessional teaching register.
